Programme Structure

Students under the Visiting Student Programme are eligible to take any courses in the final course list for exchange students, subject to them meeting the prerequisites (if any) and availability. Visiting students are also eligible for Asian Studies certification.

Only undergraduate programmes/ schools (Accountancy, Business, Economics, Information Systems, Law, Social Scieneces) are open to visiting students. A list of courses available for visiting students will be sent to applicants about two weeks before course registration. Postgraduate courses are not open to visiting students and visiting graduate students may only take undergraduate courses.

Students on this programme will have to meet SMU's admissions criteria and read courses from a selected list.

The visiting student programme period will usually be one or two terms. Each term is 15 weeks long, including a week-long mid-term break and another week of revision and examinations.

Students must have completed at least two semesters of undergraduate studies and must continue to be registered as degree-seeking students at their home universities throughout their intended duration of exchange at SMU.

Students must have obtained a GPA of 3.0 out of 4, or equivalent.

As the medium of instruction at SMU is English (except for language courses), students must be proficient in the English language in order to benefit from their studies at SMU. Students from non-English-medium institutions must fulfil at least one of the following:

  • TOEFL score of at least:
  1. 550 for the paper-based test; or
  2. 213 for the computer-based test; or
  3. 79 for the internet-based test
  • IELTS result of at least 6.5; or
