Justus Liebig University Giessen has established two well-known summer schools: The U.S.-German Summer School in International and Comparative Law and the Hessen International Summer University in Intellectual Property & Biotechnology - Linking Law, Business and Science. Both programs offer four weeks in a truly international atmosphere with around 60 - 80 students from countries all over the world coming to our campus.

The courses, which form the academic part of our program, are not only designed to educate participants in the highly popular fields of intellectual property and biotechnology, but also to inspire them. The interdisciplinary program is designed for postgraduates, undergraduates with some basic knowledge in the area of biotechnology, and young professionals, who want to learn about the European way of dealing with the challenges of the new and developing industry. Furthermore, it is attractive for people who want to gain some first-hand experience with German and European culture. All seminars are taught in English by internationally established academics and practitioners. Furthermore, students will attend German language courses of different levels according to their previous knowledge.

The Hessen International Summer University in Intellectual Property & Biotechnology - Linking Law, Business and Science program at Justus Liebig University Giessen combines high-quality teaching with a wide range of cultural and social activities. In addition to the academic courses, we offer various field trips: two on-site visits to international biotechnology companies (Merck and EMBL), a three-day trip to Hamburg and a three-day trip to Berlin, these will add more practical elements to the content learned in class. The students will visit some of the most beautiful places in Germany during these trips. Above all, studying abroad will broaden one's horizon. Participants will gain intercultural knowledge because of the interaction with their fellow students but most important, they will spend a great time in an international environment.

The program is designed for undergraduate students, graduate students and young professionals from all over the world, studying topics related to economics and management, natural sciences and law.

Students, who want to participate in the International Summer University, have the possibility to apply for financial subsidies.

An application for a scholarship is only possible with your initial application to the program via an Online Application Form.

How to apply for a scholarship?

If you state that you wish to apply for financial subsidies in the Online Application Form, you will be automatically requested to attach the following documents to your application:

  • One letter of reference from one of your lecturers (written in the English language)
  • CV
  • A thorough letter of motivation including your reasons to apply for the course and stating your personal financial neediness.
  • Transcripts of Records showing us your academic achievements (optional)
  • A certificate of your proficiency in the English language (if you are not a native speaker)

What is covered by a scholarship?

A scholarship will partially reduce the total fee. The sum is set individually since it depends on the individual application and the available funds, which vary yearly. Unfortunately, we are not able to provide scholarships, which waive the complete program fee. Scholarships will not cover travel costs.
