In this course, the bioanalysis of biopharmaceuticals is discussed and the technical aspects of method development are reviewed in the light of the final assay objectives in industry. Integrated bioanalytics relies on a variety of important methods to acquire reliable information about the state of a biological system, e.g. by analyzing tissues, body fluids.

As compounds differ in their physico-chemical properties, appropriate analytical strategies are required for sample separation, pre-treatment, detection methodology and validation. Students will acquire the necessary knowledge to understand the most common methods applied and will be able to define the basic needs to develop and perform integrated biomolecular analyses, as well as to review and evaluate studies in the bioanalytical field. Finally, the relation (physico- chemical features) between and interaction (drug-protein interactions, adverse-drug reactions) of biopharmaceuticals and relatively small-drug related compounds will be overviewed. With respect to the methodologies applied, the power of (biological and immuno-) assays and mass spectrometry-based procedures will be highlighted.


The course meets the criteria for Continuous Professional Development (CPD) diplomas, and it will be part of a (forthcoming) Masters of Advanced Safety Sciences degree. The course setup is already consistent with the requirements of the Bologna process. At the moment, the full Master program is undergoing evaluation for being accredited and certified as a regular MSc degree from the University of Constance/Germany.When registering for a “Stand Alone” course only, this course provides CPD credits towards the participant’s individual CPD portfolio

Academic Requirements

Participants in the SafeSciMET courses and Master’s programme are normally science, medical or veterinary graduates, either currently working in a safety science environment or seeking to improve their insight and knowledge of safety science in some area of their career. Normally, a minimum of a higher academic qualification at least to MSc degree or equivalent in a relevant subject is a precondition. Competence in both written and spoken English to an IELTS level or equivalent of 7.0 is an absolute requirement. Applicants who wish to apply for the MSc degree in Safety Sciences for Medicines will normally also possess a minimum of one year working experience in the Safety Sciences field.If courses are taken one by one as “stand alone” for personal Continual Professional Development (CPD), there are no formal entrance requirements, although a scientific background to at least MSc level or equivalent is recommended.
