About

History

The land-grant heritage of South Dakota State University, which began with a college founded in 1881, originates from local and national legislation dating back to 1862. The Morrill Act, passed by Congress and signed by President Abraham Lincoln in July of that year, embodied a revolutionary idea in higher education.

Research

South Dakota State University (SDSU) is building a future for South Dakota, the nation, and the globe. SDSU's primary land-grant mission is to create opportunities for our state through research and education. Research has been a vital part of SDSU since 1887 with the creation of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station.

Since that time, SDSU has been the reliable resource for research-based information and community leadership. Today, research provides a solid knowledge base for economic development, academic programs, and experiential opportunities for students.
