Founded in 1899 by Sir Patrick Manson, the School has expanded in recent years at its two main sites on Keppel Street and Tavistock Place.


Our education provision has increased to more than 1,000 London-based Master's and Research students, 3,000 studying postgraduate courses by distance learning, and 1,000 each year on short courses and continuous professional development. In 2015, we launched a series of free online courses (MOOCs), studied by around 25,000 participants globally.


The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine is a world-leading centre for research in public and global health. We have a unique range and depth of expertise integrating laboratory, clinical, population and social sciences. The School is highly rated for impact and our research contributes to health policy and practice in the UK and around the world.

    Sports facilities

    The School is situated in Bloomsbury, the heart of the academic community in London. The University of London Union (ULU) is situated a minute’s walk from the School, and offers a range of services to students, including refectories, bars, travel agent, shop as well as a gym, swimming pool and other sporting facilities. As a full-time student, you will also be eligible for discounts on travel, cinema and theatre tickets, and in some shops.


    • LSHTM last underwent Institutional Review by the UK Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) in autumn 2012, looking at the quality and standards of our educational provision. This is a process in which all UK universities are required to participate every six years.
