Overview
Immunology of Tropical Diseases from Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine is taught through a combination of lectures, seminars and practical classes in the laboratory.
Students are expected to supplement their learning in lectures through directed reading and are also required to present current research papers during seminar sessions.
One week is devoted to intensive laboratory sessions during which you are exposed to a range of immunological techniques.
Students at Immunology of Tropical Diseases from Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine will:
- address the most efficient tool to reduce mortality and morbidity due to infection – vaccination.
- gain knowledge in evasion strategies which might be exploited in the treatment of other diseases, such as autoimmune conditions.
Programme Structure
Courses include:
- Immune responses to protozoan infections (malaria, leishmaniasis, trypanosomiasis);
- Antigenic variation and diversity in malaria; antigenic variation in African trypanosomes;
- Immunopathology of protozoan and helminth infections;
- Immune responses to helminth infections (schistosomiasis, filarial nematodes, intestinal nematodes, cestodes);
- Helminth evasion and modulation of immune responses;
- Approaches to vaccination against protozoan and helminth infections;
- Use of immunological methods for the diagnosis of parasitic infections.

- Students whose first language is not English must provide evidence of an IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score of at least 6.5 with a minimum of 5.5 in all learning components, or a TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of at least 88 for the Internet-based Test (iBT), with minimum scores of 21 for Listening and Writing, 22 for Reading and 23 for Speaking. Tests should be within their validity period of 2 years.
