Preparation for Advanced Studies in Speech-Language Pathology (Certificate of Pre-SLP), Certificate

  • Application Deadline
  • 24 months
California State University Northridge’s Certificate of Preparation for Advanced Studies in Speech-Language Pathology (Certificate of Pre-SLP) is designed for college graduates who desire careers in the rapidly growing field of speech-language pathology but did not major in Communication Disorders and Sciences or Speech-Language Pathology as undergraduates.

The two-year Certificate of Pre-CDS program prepares program completers to meet the admissions curriculum criteria for the California State University Northridge Master’s degree in Communication Disorders and Sciences.

The Certificate of Pre-SLP Program is an academically rigorous program and students hoping to be accepted into Communicative Disorders graduate programs should carefully and honestly evaluate their potential for excelling in their coursework and maintaining a high GPA based on their previous academic performance, their current load of additional responsibilities outside the educational arena, and their motivation. For further discussion, students should work closely with their academic advisors.

Features of the Program

  • The Certificate of Pre-SLP is taught in the cohort format, which ensures on-time completion, facilitates the development of networking relationships with fellow students, and maximizes interaction with faculty.
  • Students who satisfactorily complete the Pre-SLP program and meet the automatic entrance criteria are eligible for automatic admission into CSUN’s online Master of Science in Communication Disorders and Sciences: Speech-Language Pathology program.
  • Because Certificate of Pre-SLP courses are taught by faculty who also teach in CSUN’s CDS master’s program, students who plan to enter this degree program are able to develop learner-mentor relationships with their future CDS professors.

The IELTS – or the International English Language Test System – tests your English-language abilities (writing, listening, speaking, and reading) on a scale of 1.00–9.00. The minimum IELTS score requirement refers to which Overall Band Score you received, which is your combined average score. Read more about IELTS.

Academic Requirements

You need the following GPA score:

Required score: 2.5

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 2.5 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

  • This programme accepts GRE® scores, however, has not provided a recommended or minimum required score range.

The GRE® General Test is a widely administered admissions test that measures the skills needed in today's graduate and business school programs worldwide. The GRE® General Test contains three sections - Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Analytical Writing. Three scores are reported: a Verbal Reasoning score on a 130 - 170 score scale in one-point increments, a Quantitative Reasoning score on a 130 - 170 score scale in one-point increments, and an Analytical Writing score on a 0 - 6 score scale in half-point increments.

GRE score: Old Scale - 1010 or New Scale - 297.

To be admitted to the Certificate of Pre-SLP program, applicants must possess:
  • A Bachelor's degree from an accredited university in any field of study.
  • No less than a 2.5 GPA in the last 60 semester/90 quarter academic units attempted, independent of when the bachelor's degree was granted.
    • The entire academic term in which the 60-90 units began will be used in this calculation. Postgraduate course work is included in the calculation only if it consists of standard academic offerings at the upper-division level (third year/junior level or above).
    • Nonstandard credit offerings (professional training, CEU courses, non-degree or other professional credit) are not included in the calculation.
