Cities are the primary source of growth and innovation but at the same time large consumer of energy, and raw materials. Most anthropogenic causes of greenhouse gas emissions are associated with urban activities. Green Cities for Eco-efficiency course is offered at Erasmus University Rotterdam.

About

The actual “de-compacted functional” and unsustainable model of our cities together with the advent of climate change, the shortage of fossil fuels and natural raw materials are forcing cities to rethink their way of planning and growth. In this context cities are responding with arrays of options or levers at their disposal when it comes to the task of improving their overall environmental performance and eco-efficiency.

Green Cities for Eco-efficiency course is offered at Erasmus University Rotterdam.

Course content

The green city concept is one approach cities around the world are implementing to try to improve their overall environmental performance in order to become more competitive, equitable and sustainable. The green city approach is derived from different theories and concepts developed in the twenty century such as sustainable development, sustainable cities, green architecture, compact cities, green urbanism, sustainable urbanism and eco-cities.

The green city course provides a collection of concrete local solutions and policies cities in many countries are applying for integrating green concepts into their planning and managing processes. Examples of these approaches are the promotion of a more equal balancing between green and built spaces, reducing energy consumption; increasing water-sensitiveness & water conservation; more sustainable and smart transportation systems; greening urban services (wastewater treatment, drainage systems, solid waste systems); promoting eco industrial parks; and experimenting new methods in urban agriculture (such as vertical urban farms) which reduces energy consumption as well as improves food security by bringing location of food production nearer to the consumer markets.

The course will also look at the green economics & green growth tools being used by cities to help them to become green cities. Several visits to Dutch experiences using green city approaches as well as the invitation of guest lecturers from different countries bring practical contributions to help the participants to prepare two practical exercises: how green is your city (measuring city environmental performance) and Green City Action Planning.
