Overview
If you have applied for a Pre-sessional English courses course at The University of Manchester but have not yet fully met the English language requirement for your academic course you may be eligible to study a pre-sessional course in order to meet those requirements.
We offer courses for 10 weeks, 6 weeks or 3 weeks. Your academic department will advise you on the length of course they would like you to take, and whether you need to take an IELTS/TOEFL exam at the end of your course.
Course description
Pre-sessional courses last for between 3 - 10 weeks and focus on improving your academic English. All our courses cover areas such as academic writing, note-taking and presentation skills. The length of course you will be required to take will be determined by the academic School to which you have applied, with advice from the ULC.
For students who do not have a conditional offer from the University of Manchester or who need a longer period of study, our English for Academic Purposes course would be more appropriate.
Aims
The Pre-sessional courses aim to:
- develop students’ confidence and competence in using English in an academic environment
- encourage independent learning
- help students to be confident users of English in the wider environment beyond the University
Programme Structure
- Students on our Pre-sessional courses will be continuously assessed throughout the course.
- You will complete written assignments and oral presentations. Unconditional offer holders will also be tested formally in their reading and listening skills. All assessment will contribute to your final ULC assessment band.
