Learning objectives

Upon completion, the participant should be able to:
  • suggest options for waste reduction at source so as to reduce quantities of waste generated;
  • choose from an array of options to turn waste into economic goods;
  • suggest treatment/disposal methods for waste from which the value has been taken out and to make basic calculations related to the conceptual design thereof;
  • assess the impact of waste and waste management on other environmental compartments;
  • roughly assess financial consequences of proposed management aspects in SWM;
  • conceptually develop a solid waste management scheme for an urban area.

Programme Structure

Course Content

  • Introduction to SWM: Waste quantity and quality, generation of waste per capita and region; composition of waste; small scale industry waste; organanic agricultural waste;
  • Waste Collection and Transport: Collection of mixed waste or of source seperated waste, collection logistics, transfer stations; machine park planning; Sub-contractors;
  • Treatment/disposal Technologies: dumping, sanitary landfills, mechanical-biological treatment, incineration, anaerobic digestion, composting; recycling of plastics, batteries, e-waste, Green House Gas emission and emision modeling, CDM, energy recovery; 
  • Financial, Social and Institutional aspects: costs of collection, seperation, management; equipment costs; social costs, stake holders, scavengers, public health issues, policy and legislation.

Audience

This SWM short course is especially for junior and mid-career professionals at the management, decision-making and educational level, related to waste handling, urban infrastructure and urban environmental management.

    C1 Advanced is a Cambridge English Qualification. It reports on the Cambridge English Scale between 142 and 210. You will receive a separate score for each of the four skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking) and for Use of English. These five scores are averaged to give you an overall result for the exam. Universities and colleges may ask you to achieve a specific score, either overall or for a particular skill.

    Note: degree programmes and applications may require a more specific minimum score for admission.
