This English for Academic Purposes from The University of Manchester is ideal for you if you have a B1-B2 level of English (according to the CEFR) and you are aiming to continue to an undergraduate or postgraduate programme either at the University of Manchester or another university in an English speaking country.
Course description
The English for Academic Purposes (EAP) course lasts for between 1 and 3 terms (10 – 29 weeks). The course will provide you with the necessary academic English language proficiency to progress to a Pre-sessional or degree level course. The length of course you take will depend on your current level of English.
You will study for up to 24 hours per week (including tutorials and self-study) in classes of no more than 16 students. The course offers a combination of academic English language classes along with an introduction to academic study skills to help prepare for further study in the UK. The course will focus on the four language skills of listening, reading, writing and speaking, along with grammar, vocabulary and study skills.Programme Structure
- You will study for up to 24 hours per week including tutorials and periods of self-study. Core EAP classes will focus on all four language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing), grammar, vocabulary and study skills.
- You will also have classes in extended reading, culture and communication, grammar for writing and extended listening.
- One-to-one tutorials will take place on a regular basis throughout the course to allow students the opportunity to discuss their progression and individual English language learning needs.

General requirements
- The minimum enrolment age is 18.
- We require you to demonstrate a minimum level of English Proficiency to study on our full-time English Language courses. You must have a minimum IELTS 4.5 overall, with 4.5 in writing and no less than 4.0 in any other sub-skill (or equivalent at B1 on the CEFR). We also accept TOEFL iBT scores of 32 overall with 12 in writing and no less than 11 in any other sub-skill and 41 in Pearson Test of English.
- This course is not suitable for advanced students (C1/C2 on the CEFR or IELTS 7.0 overall or in a subskill).
