Within the The Rise of Modern Europe - Track course from Utrecht Summer School you will immerse yourself in Europe’s history and culture from the Middle Ages to the end of the twentieth century and visit many of its actual physical remains.
The Rise of Modern Europe programme from Utrecht Summer School starts in the beautiful city of Utrecht, studying the history of Europe from a Dutch perspective.
This historical journey, which illuminates Europe from the Middle Ages to the end of the 19th century, will help you to understand the many social, historical, religious and cultural factors that came to shape modern Europe.

Where better than the thrilling city of Berlin to study the making of Europe in the 20th century? You will not only explore the background and history of the World Wars and the era leading up to it, but you will also be introduced to the Interbellum, the Cold War, and the relations of Europe with Russia and the USA.
Several excursions will be organised in which you will visit some of the most iconic German landmarks. Being such a crucial city in Europe’s modern history, Berlin is not only the most perfect location for this course, it is also one of the most vibrant and bustling cities in Europe nowadays!
Programme Structure
Courses include:
- You will, for example, gain insight into the Dutch Golden Age; the era spanning roughly the 17th century in which the Dutch became one of the world’s greatest maritime, economic and artistic world powers after rebelling against their Spanish rulers.
- Utrecht will provide you with a strongly interactive course programme, visiting several historical museums in Utrecht: the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and the thirteenth-century royal palace in The Hague where the Dutch government is seated today.
