Treatment of wastewater is often practiced to remove organic matter and nutrients from wastewater using biological treatment systems, typically activated sludge systems.   This course will equip the participants with the ability to familiarize with the basic wastewater parameters. It will also cover the operation and maintenance as well as trouble shooting of activated sludge treatment systems.  


Upon completion of this Basic Wastewater Parameters - Analysis and Interpretation for Biological Wastewater Treatment programme at Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the basic parameters in biological wastewater treatment process.
  • Explain the working mechanism of various activated sludge treatment systems.
  • Understand the operation and maintenance of activated sludge treatment systems.

    Programme Structure

    Course Content:

  • Basic biological and physical treatment wastewater characteristics, treatment concepts and principles.
  • Laboratory experiments on the following wastewater parameters:
  • Biochemical Oxygen Demand: This is the amount of oxygen used to degrade biodegradable organic matter in a wastewater sample.
  • Chemical Oxygen Demand: The total amount of oxygen to degrade organic matter which represents the total organic (biodegradable and non-biodegradable) content of the wastewater.
  • Total Suspended Solids: A number of suspended materials in wastewater which represent the solids which are filtered and dried at 103ºC. The mixed liquor solids and the mixed liquor volatile solids represent the solids present in the aeration tank.
  • Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrates, Phosphorus: Measurement of nutrients available in raw wastewater and its importance in wastewater treatment.
  • Interpretation of laboratory results on the tested wastewater parameters.
  • English Language Requirements

    This programme may require students to demonstrate proficiency in English.
