About

The skills taught in the Programming in Python - Beginner Level course at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam will teach you how to solve problems using structured programming. We will use the Python language, but the skills and principles taught in this course apply to any programming language.

Overview

The Programming in Python - Beginner Level course at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam is an introduction to the Python programming language, with many opportunities to write programs yourself.

Python is currently in high demand; it’s a programming language that has enjoyed a meteoric surge in popularity among professionals.

With supervised practical and assignments that will be evaluated, students will learn how to program through active coding. As such, this course encourages an environment of independence where students can feel secure in their own understanding and application of Python.

Python code is relatively easy to read and understand and has a vast number of practical applications, including everything from the sciences to the arts. Furthermore, the skills you’ll pick up in this course will be transferable to other programming languages.

Participants are expected to take a preliminary online course before this course starts. This course is free of charge and takes up to 16 hours to complete. Additional requirements:

Students are expected to follow an online introductory course in Python programming before attending the winter school. This online course is for free but please note that this is not the official winter school course, but an additional course you need to complete before starting the winter course 'Introduction to Programming'. It will take between 2 to 3 days but can be done at the student’s leisure. It is important that participating students complete the online course because the winter school course builds on it. Details about this course will be sent out in December.

Who can join? This course is suitable for anybody with an interest in learning to program a computer using Python. Master's students and PhD candidates of diverse backgrounds (natural or social sciences, humanities) can benefit from this course. The course is practical, not theoretical. However, programming is a form of problem-solving that requires structured, logical thought. This is not an easy course! If you are not sure if this is the right course for you, or if you have doubts about your eligibility, please contact
