How do advanced therapies differ from conventional molecular approaches? What is needed to get advanced therapies from bench to bedside? 

In this Future Medicines - Gene and Cell Therapies course from Utrecht Summer School we will cover these topics in an interactive manner combining lectures, discussions, and hands-on workshops. All steps in the drug life cycle will be discussed.

We start with an overview of current and coming cell and gene therapies. Then we discuss with a panel of experts from industry, clinic, academia, regulation and paitent federations the challenges at hand.

The second day we will work on your knowledge of cell and molecular biology. Day three and four are focused on cell and gene therapy and include a practical experiment. On the final day, the attandants present their group assignments and we finish the course with a broader overview of posiible immunotherapies.

Course aim

After this course the attendants will know exactly which cell and gene therapies are on the market. Furthermore, they will know which therapies are in the pipeline, and which technical, regulatory and financial hurdles have to be removed to clear this pipeline.

Programme Structure

  • Learn about the promises and challenges of advanced therapies throughout the drug life cycle. 


The course is organised by the course director, dr. E. E. Moret and several Future Medicines Fellows, a group of PhD students. Each day is hosted by a staff member of the Utrecht Institute for Pharmaceutical Sciences: prof. Bert Leufkens, dr. Manoe Janssen, dr. Massimiliano Caiazzo, prof. Enrico Mastrobattista and prof. Aletta Kraneveld.
