The first part of the course traces the fictional portrayals of AI in contemporary films that cut across various genres (horror, science fiction, romantic drama, animation), focusing on themes such as the turbulent relationship between human and machine, otherness, posthumanism, surveillance, and technological control (and chaos) that form the core concerns of these narratives.  

Key facts:

The second part of the course will focus on an applied aspect of cinema’s relationship with AI: the emergent uses of AI and machine learning algorithms in the film industry, ranging from the business dimension (e.g. film marketing, predicting box office performance, distribution and recommender systems) to the creative dimension (e.g. screenwriting, casting, editing).

Programme Structure


  • Students will be introduced to relevant ideas and concepts in film studies, critical theory, cultural studies, computer science, and neuroscience as they relate to the topic of AI and cinema. 
  • Students will engage with the content of the course by writing film reviews, producing a vod-/podcast, and a short research essay that will synthesise concepts and ideas from various knowledge domains relating to this course.
