About

This Post-graduate certificate in International Educating Class (PIEC) from UC Leuven-Limburg aspires to positively and sustainably change the world through education. The programme is not only for educators but for everyone who is committed to becoming a changemaker, a peacebuilder and a true global citizen.

Overview

This Post-graduate International Educating Class (PIEC) from UC Leuven-Limburg aspires to positively and sustainably change the world through education. The programme is not only for educators but for everyone who is committed to becoming a changemaker, a peacebuilder and a true global citizen.

Since 2009, the PIEC programme aims to actively contribute to the realization of the UN’s sustainable development goals (SDGs) and support you in building lasting professional and personal skills to be successful in life, in work and to become the change needed in the world today.

Post-Graduate Certificate for Sustainable Development Education

  • If you have a bachelor's or master's degree
  • If you seek to contribute to the building of peace through sustainable development
  • If you want to engage in intercultural dialogue while developing your personal and professional potential
  • If you realize that it is through education that we will positively and humanely transition into the future.
  • Then, this programme could be for you.

Based on UNESCO inspired values, the IEC programme offers:

  • immersion into capacity building, empowerment, human rights, cultural awareness, appreciative inquiry, academic communication, strategic scenario planning, global citizenship education, project cycle management, …
  • project-based collaborative group work where students from differing cultures and backgrounds work together towards a common goal
  • Based on UNESCO’s learning objectives for sustainable development education, the programme supports you to become an agent for positive social change and peace, while stimulating the building of skills you will need to be successful in life and work
  • an officially recognized certificate by both the Flemish Ministry of Education and UNESCO. The certificate provides you with an important edge when applying to other institutions of higher education and for employment. The certificate does not lead directly, however, to a teaching certificate or another degree.

What is unique about this training?

  • An Equitable ‘international Classroom’ Experience: PIEC is a programme, but it is also a ‘space’ and ‘context’ to learn about empathy and inclusivity, but also to practice it. Throughout the semester and together with your diverse group of classmates you undergo a process that leads to greater understanding and empathy. It’s a space where you develop both professionally and personally.
  • UNESCO Values: The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization was created after the global destruction of the Second World War. Its Preamble to the Constitution states that “since wars begin in the minds of men (and women), it is in minds that the defences of peace must be constructed.” PIEC is a space for intercultural dialogue about issues that concern education, science, culture and information.
  • Future skills: Organizations like the OECD (Organization of Economic Development and Cooperation) have stressed that in the future young people will need to learn humane skills that emphasize the advantage of humans over computers, but also skills like deep listening, critical thinking and problem-solving: These are skills that underline our ability to cooperate towards common goals as well as build peaceful and sustainable communities. PIEC is a space where you learn those skills.
  • Flexible semesters and start times:  Maybe you’re interested in following the full programme for one year (i.e. two semesters @ 60 ECTS credits), or only have time for half of the programme (i.e. one semester @ 30 ECTS credits)? That’s possible! Our starting times are flexible. You begin either in the Spring or in the Fall, depending on your schedule. At the end of each semester, you will receive a valuable certificate that is endorsed by both the Flemish Community and UNESCO (United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization).

Career prospects

This programme provides you with the knowledge and skills necessary to help you to shape the future, and be an agent of positive and sustainable social change through education. Our students come from all backgrounds and disciplines, who want to learn and practice future skills needed for their professional and personal growth. Although our programme does not lead to a degree, many of our students have used the programme as a springboard to reflect upon and further their aspirations in higher education, but also positions in governmental and non-governmental institutions and business.

Programme Structure

  • This one-year English-language 60 ECTS credit programme is divided into two (2) semesters of 30 ECTS credits each that can be followed separately or as a whole. You can begin in either the Fall (Sept-Jan) or the Spring (Feb-June).
