About

In this Elementary French 1 course at The Open University UK you’ll start to understand and produce more complex language. You’ll improve your reading, writing, speaking and listening in French through a variety of online activities and focus on extending your knowledge of vocabulary and language structures to talk about leisure, travel and holidays.

Overview

By the end of the Elementary French 1 course at The Open University UK, you’ll have built your own French phrase book and developed the skills needed to speak about and understand concepts relating to travel, holidays and the weather. You'll learn, for example, to express your past love of football, or to discuss your thoughts about a night in watching ‘la télé’!

After successfully completing this short course, you will receive a digital badge. This can be shared on social media, added to email signatures or act as a certificate.

Learner support

You will have access to discussion forums that you are strongly encouraged to participate in as these forums combine support from fellow students with input from a language-specialist learning adviser. Other support is available via the StudentHome website and Computing Helpdesk.

Programme Structure

Throughout the course, you’ll build up your own French phrase book covering varied topics such as:

  • leisure activities (sporting, creative and cultural activities)
  • ways of expressing likes and dislikes and how often you do something
  • the weather (forecast, temperatures, conditions and what you do in them)
  • television and shows in France
  • ways of describing activities you used to do (the past tense)
  • holiday destinations, activities and holidays outside mainland France
  • ways of making travel arrangements (including enquiries and bookings)
  • ways of describing the holidays you took
  • writing postcards.

At the end of the course, you’ll have studied French verbs (passé composé and the imperfect), adverbs, pronouns, the superlative and expanded your vocabulary and knowledge of French-speaking countries. Along with completing the activities and a quiz in each unit to strengthen your learning, you’ll have gained a solid foundation of French.
