Overview
Opportunities
Communication is an important element of our workplace behaviour. It is the means by which we share information, form working relationships and come to a shared understanding of the world around us. Your ability to communicate effectively with those around you, and they with you, is often vital to the success of the organisation. How else would you be able to organise and coordinate the efforts of employees and direct their behaviour toward the achievement of organisational goals?
But the purpose of communication is often misunderstood. It is common, for example, for people to believe or express sentiments such as: 'If only you understood me you would agree', or 'The reason this didn't work is that you didn't understand my message'. Effective communication does not necessarily equate to agreement, and it certainly does not guarantee success. While communication does not equal agreement or success, an organisation has a much better chance of succeeding if everyone communicates effectively to develop a level of shared understanding.
