Immerse yourself in the vivid colours and wondrous stories of Persian and Indian miniature paintings. On this Introduction to Miniature Painting short course at the University of the Arts London (UAL) you will explore Eastern and Western, ancient and modern influences and you will create your own miniature painting using traditional and contemporary techniques.

Overview

At the end of this Introduction to Miniature Painting course at the University of the Arts London (UAL) you'll have your own miniature painting and knowledge of basic techniques which you can use in a wide range of contemporary painting, illustration and design applications. 

About the course

  • You will learn how miniature paintings are created, using techniques including burnishing, inking and various tracing and transferring techniques. You will explore miniature painting colours, with an option to make paint from pigments.
  • Each week will start with an online session introducing the techniques with individual assignments to complete during the week. The following week the tutor will provide personal feedback and introduce more techniques to build your knowledge. We delve deep into focusing on individual brush technique via minute hand movements and brush angles.
  • You could apply the knowledge and skills gained from this course to any professional career in the art and design worlds, including illustration, painting and fashion design.

General requirements

Paper:

  • At least 2 x A4 sheet of 300gsm hot-pressed watercolour paper (with very smooth surface) eg Fabriano or Bockingford brand (other brands are fine) and A4 tracing paper
Ink:
  • Chinese ink
Paints:
  • Set of artist-quality watercolours preferably in pan form rather than tube form (but tube is ok)

Brushes:

  • One main brush: The Rocks brush
  • Other handmade brushes for painting in this style can be purchased online at above link or during the course with 10% discount for course students.
  • Alternatively, you may use your own 000 (American 00000 – tiniest size) brushes that you currently paint with, plus larger size sable watercolour brushes up to size 5-6
  • Palette with wells to contain water-based paint, water pot

Drawing equipment:

  • Sharp HB pencils, erasers, sharpeners, rulers, ruling pen, masking tape
  • Burnisher or polished agate egg or smooth stone/pebble. If not easy to get hold of then a spoon with a smooth back that doesn’t leave marks when rubbed onto paper.
