About

In 2020 in the midst of a global pandemic a school was formed in the Tuscan countryside - Chianti by Architectural Association. Leading contemporary Italian architecture collectives were invited together to form the faculty of the school : The Possibility of an Island.

Overview

Emerging from this moment of unprecedented isolation there was an impulse and desire to work together again. The practice and methodology that collective practice embodies resonated with the energy and works that the school aimed to produce.

Moving away from the architect as a single individual to instead a practice of multiplicity and inclusion.

The Possibility of an Island course is offered by Architectural Association

Together with a group of young international participants each collective put forward a design brief that addressed the spatial quality of temporality and transition.

Producing new tools, practices and rituals that reflect on this particular moment in time. The resulting works are temporary architectures that disappear following the two week school.

This year we will be producing toolkits in the form of video essays and photographs that design strategies of adaptation in times of drastic change.

Programme Structure

  • A nightly public program of guests featuring events, lectures, performances and celebrations. With special guests such as Gian Piero Frassinelli - Superstudio, Elettra Fiumi - Radical Landscapes - Gruppo 9999 revival, Metahaven, Ludwig Engel and many more.
