About

The Archaeology of the Present Time - Tokyo Way of Life program from Architectural Association invites active observation and creative individual responses to the social and cultural landscape of Japan. Cyclical intervals between the three workshops are intended to provoke new knowledge while bringing together contrasting notions of global and local: GLOCAL

Overview

The Archaeology of the Present Time - Tokyo Way of Life Program from Architectural Association is a unique design research platform that interlinks three workshops across geographical and contextual distances: the post-agricultural community in Koshirakura, the contemporary urban/suburban life styles of Tokyo, and the fabrication facilities situated at the woodlands of Hooke Park and in ICI Lab.

Applicants may consider one, two or all three workshops according to their interests

With support from Maeda Corporation, the Japan Study Program encourages collaboration between individuals in association with various cultural institutions. There are bursaries available for visiting tutors and students from the AA.

Program Director: Shin Egashira in association with Maeda Corporation Global Design Team of ICI Lab, Tokyo National University of Fine Arts, Tokamachi Town Hall, Koshirakura Village, Toride Community and AA Hooke Park.

Programme Structure

  • This field research workshop will be held in collaboration with the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts (Tokyo Gedai) and ICI Camp in Toride.
  • The programme will engage with two communities at either end of a 30-minute commuter train journey: the inner-city working community of Ueno and Toride, a satellite town on the eastern edge of Tokyo.
  • Two alternating perspectives of Tokyoite life will be explored through the work of architects Wajiro Kon, Genpei Akasegawa and Konpeitou, offering a counterpoint to the history of post-Metabolism Tokyo.
  • Participants in the workshop will collect stories and architectural fragments captured through photography, film, objects and drawing.
