Overview
What you will study
First part of the Strengthening Design of Existing Steel and Concrete Structures course offered by University Teknologi PETRONAS covers on steel structures strengthening design. The basic overview on ultimate strength capacity of steel beams, columns, continuous beams, and connections in accordance with design codes will be presented. Thereafter, practical design guidelines for strengthening existing steel members will be covered. For instance, gravity framing systems, relevant code requirements of the international existing building code and relevant specifications for rehabilitation and retrofit guides including determination of material strengths and section properties of older steel members will be discussed. Several practical solutions such as various reinforcing schemes including welded plate reinforcing; introduction of composite action; post-tensioning approach; and strengthening by CFRP wrapping will be discussed along with practical examples. This course will present detailed strengthening examples that participants can reference in their design practice.
The second part of this course is aimed to develop a concise understanding into the design of externally bonded fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) systems for strengthening concrete structures in accordance to Concrete Society Technical Report 55 (TR 55) design guidance. The course content mainly covers three chapters dealing with specific design aspects in FRP strengthening; namely flexure, shear and axially-loaded members.
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Evaluating the capacity of existing steel structures
- Identify motivations for strengthening existing structural steel
- Describe typical steel reinforcement solutions such as welding plates, post-tensioning, CFRP wrapping.
- Understand the basis design consideration in the TR 55 design guidance for FRP strengthening.
- Design FRP strengthened concrete members in flexure, shear and axially-loaded.
