About

The Chinese Beginners Summer Course at Tilburg University course aims:
  • describe the characteristics of the Chinese language;
  • apply basic grammar rules and 200 words to construct simple sentences;
  • carry out 10 thematic dialogues;
  • recognize the meaning and Pinyin transcriptions of phrases and sentences based on the combination of the 120 Chinese characters;
  • write phrases and sentences based on the combination of 120 given Chinese characters (thus reproduction is not required);
  • differentiate the cultural differences between the Dutch and Chinese etiquette.

Programme Structure

Course Specifics
  • An attendance of 80% is required.
  • This course consists of 10 daily lectures in two weeks. After each daily lecture, students need to spend 1.5 hours on the recording assignments and preparation for the test.
  • The final grade will be determined through 8 in-class tests (40%), 10 ReLANPro recording assignments (30%) and 1 speaking performance assessment (30%).The intended end level is A1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEF) and Level 1 of the Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK).
  • The classroom language is mostly Chinese, but the explanation will be in English or Dutch.
  • ReLANpro software. This is a software package which we use to send you speaking exercises.
  • In case of low enrollment numbers, the Language Center remains the right to cancel a course.

Academic Requirements

  • This course is for students who have NEVER learned Chinese. If you have any prior learning experiences of the Chinese language, please contact the teacher to make sure whether this course suits your level.
  • All (admitted) participants should register with the Tilburg University Summer School. Registration is possible as of mid-February. Registration at Tilburg University Summer School should be completed by 31 May 2016.
