Overview

A follow-on from 'Introduction to millinery,' this millinery couse help develop your understanding of design, proportion, balance and the application of colour, taking your millinery knowledge a stage further. You'll learn how to select from a wide range of woven and knitted fabrics, felts and straw for millinery, and how to apply these to your designs. The selection and use of foundation materials is also covered.You'll also be introduced to the art of draping fabrics either as a trimming or for a whole hat, along with techniques for blocking felt, straw and foundation materials to help you develop your manipulation skills.By the time you've finished the course, you should have completed a parasisal and a cocktail hat.Intermediate. You should have completed the beginners level course or have equivalent experience.Your course place is confirmed once you have booked online or via the phone using a credit or debit card. There is no deadline for booking. Places are offered on a first come, first served basis, and all courses have a maximum number of students. We suggest you book early to avoid disappointment.

Programme Structure

In order to fully participate in the practical exercises please bring the following materials/equipment to the first class:

  • Needles (millinery sizes, 6, 7 & 8 or a mixed pack of 3-9)
  • Thimble
  • Tape measure
  • Fabric and paper scissors
  • 100% Polyester thread in black and white (100m rolls will be sufficient)
  • Tailors chalk or tailors pencil
  • Apron
  • Household pins (26 x 0.75mm)
  • Dressmaking pins (30 x 0.60mm)
  • Cling film
  • Pencil, pen, sharpener, rubber and ruler
  • Notebook
