Overview
The Understanding and Preventing Crime module offered by University College London (UCL)will consider the challenges and processes associated with measuring and analysing crime and will present some of the key crime trends. Special attention will be devoted to how crime patterns manifest in space and time and how they can be analysed.
Criminological and psychological theories relating to criminal behaviour will be compared and the role of the traditional criminal justice system as a means of crime control, compared to other crime prevention frameworks, will be explored.
Module hours
The module is fully taught online through a blend of daily live teaching sessions, guided learning activities, structured group work, and independent learning.

Programme Structure
Upon successful completion of this module, students will:
- Have a grasp of major crime trends
- Be able to think critically about current methods of crime measurement and crime-related theory
- Understand the key theories that relate to criminal behaviour and how these can be used to produce effective crime control policies
- Be able to demonstrate familiarity with the British Criminal Justice System
- Appreciate the need for evidence-informed responses to crime and the role of multidisciplinary approaches.
Audience
This is a level one module (equivalent to first year undergraduate). No prior subject knowledge is required for this module, but students are expected to have a keen interest in the area.
Lecturers
Lisa Tompson is a Senior Research Associate in the Department of Security and Crime Science. Her research interests lie in the use of spatio-temporal methods in crime analysis and crime prevention.
She is a former Police Crime Analyst.

General requirements
You will have completed one year of undergraduate study at the time of joining the summer school, and be able to demonstrate an average grade of:
·3.3/4.0 GPA (US scale)
·2:1 (UK scale)
If English is not your first language, you will need to show proficiency by providing us with a qualification such as:
·IELTS 7.0, with 6.5 in each subtest
·GCSE/IGCSE, with a pass at grade C
