École Polytechnique is an historic institution. Founded in 1794, it holds a leading role in the French academic tradition – Poincaré, Ampère, Schwartz and Fresnel are just a few of the prestigious scientists to have studied here.
Academic programs are formed and structured in close collaboration with industry and alumni. They are strongly supported by an International Advisory Panel that comprises leading figures from major public and private sector companies as well as senior representatives from government and academia.
The academic courses are developed and delivered by world-class faculty from Ecole Polytechnique, associated Research Centers, national and international academic partners as well as by top-level industry professionals, ensuring a depth of pertinent theoretical and practical content.
The Graduate degree programs also include company visits and conferences held by business leading figures.
École Polytechnique's Research Center includes 22 world-class scientific departments in 8 major fields addressing today’s most pressing social and technological challenges through interdisciplinary and cross-functional projects. Most of them are joint research units with the world-renowned French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS). École Polytechnique has always integrated research into all its academic programs and in close consultation with industry.

With only around 3600 students and a campus of 164 hectares, l'X is a relatively small university, which can be refreshing if you have felt lost in larger institutions. Our students make up a close-knit community and though you will blend in, you certainly will not fade away. Our international students contribute to the diversity of our small community – over 60 different nationalities are represented on campus, with 30% of the student body and 39% of the faculty coming from abroad.
Sports have always formed a very important part in students' education at École Polytechnique. We truly believe that sports will help you develop qualities and skills such as sense of discipline, leadership, teamwork, spirit of healthy competition and fair play, confidence in oneself and ethics.
Sport is also an excellent way of breaking down barriers and bringing people of different backgrounds together. In particular, we consider sport as one of the best ways to facilitate the integration of international students on campus (and more generally in France).
The École Polytechnique's vibrant student life can be attributed to the wide range of associations available to students. In total, polytechnicians take part in almost 250 associations in a great variety of cultural, artistic, social, scientific, religious and sporting activities.
