History
- The University of Newcastle began as a college of the University of New South Wales. It opened in 1951 and accepted its first students in 1952.
- In 1964 it was granted autonomy by NSW parliament and became an independent university in 1965.
- Since its foundation, the staff, students and leaders of the University have introduced unique ways of thinking and operating that have led to remarkable outcomes
Education
Our three colleges offer over 180 undergraduate and postgraduate programs across subject areas covering engineering and built environment, education and arts, business and law, science, and health and medicine.
The University's Language Centre offers a wide range of intensive English training programs.
The University of Newcastle College of International Education (UNCIE) is the official on-campus pathway college for international students, offering various Foundation and Diploma courses.

In Sydney our library is open until 10pm weekdays. At each library you can ask staff for assistance and find spaces to collaborate or meet as groups, as well as quiet zones for focused study.
ICT services
At the University of Newcastle you have access to world-class IT infrastructure and services. Students at all campuses – including studying remotely – can connect with our suite of computer accounts, and have free access to cutting-edge software and cloud storage. If you’re on-campus, there are thousands of computers and devices available for your use, as well as wireless and wired networks.
Medical services
A medical centre is located at both Newcastle and Central Coast campuses. The Callaghan campus also has a pharmacy (for prescriptions, travel medicine and general supplies), a physiotherapy clinic, and a pathology service for blood tests. The Central Coast campus has an oral health centre that provides services including oral examinations, oral hygiene, periodontal and preventative treatments.
