The City University of New York

Every year, hundreds of thousands of students – including a record 274,000 degree-credit students – choose The City University of New York for a multitude of reasons that can be summed up as one: opportunity. Providing a quality, accessible education, regardless of background or means, has been CUNY’s mission since 1847.

History

Our mission dates to 1847 when founder Townsend Harris, an early champion of public education and a pioneering diplomat who was the first U.S. ambassador to Japan, called upon New York City to create a public academy of higher learning to “educate the whole people.”

Education

The University is an integrated system of senior and community colleges, graduate and professional schools, research centers, institutes and consortia. From certificate courses to Ph.D. programs, CUNY offers postsecondary learning to students of all backgrounds. It provides the city with graduates trained for high-demand positions in the sciences, technology, mathematics, teaching, nursing and other fields.

Research

The mission of the CUNY Office of Research is to promote and support the research, scholarly, and creative pursuits of the CUNY community, to provide assurance to funding agencies and to the public that research at the University is conducted in accordance with the highest ethical standards, and to enhance technology commercialization, entrepreneurship, and economic development activities.

Student engagement has been an integral and vital component of student success. It is well-documented that students who are involved in their campus community excel academically.

Student engagement is more important than ever as employers and graduate schools value the skills and competencies learned from participating in co-curricular activities. In addition, students use the knowledge and experience they gain to improve their local communities.

CUNY colleges, as well as the Graduate School and University Center, receive their institutional accreditation from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE or Middle States). MSCHE examines each institution as a whole, rather than specific programs within institutions.
