In 1873, Mines opened under the auspices of the Episcopal Church and in 1874 the School of Mines became a territorial institution and has been a state institution since 1876 when Colorado attained statehood. The first Colorado School of Mines Board of Trustees meeting was held in 1879, the first formal commencement for two graduates was held in 1883.
The nexus between the earth, the environment and society’s need to generate and distribute energy in an economic and sustainable way is central to Mines’ specialized mission. In FY 2018, research awards totaled more than $65.89 million, with roughly 35 percent funded by non-federal sources.

The Coulter Student Health Center is located at 1770 Elm Street, across from Elm Hall and next to the Intramurals (IM) fields. It is staffed by nurse practitioners and registered nurses throughout the day. Open to all Mines students regardless of insurance coverage.
Colorado School of Mines' proud athletic history has produced 263 All-Americans earning 580 total awards.
At Mines, there are countless ways to get involved including student government, the Mines Activities Council (our programming board), 11 Greek Chapters (7 fraternities and 4 sororities), orientation leaders and over 220 registered student organizations! You can make friends, develop your leadership and life skills, put your skills to work outside the classroom, work on meaningful projects, advocate for your peers and have fun.
Colorado School of Mines is accredited through the doctoral degree by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association.
The undergraduate engineering programs at Mines are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).
