Michigan Technological University

Michigan Technological University began as the Michigan Mining School in Houghton in 1885. Established by the state of Michigan to train mining engineers to better operate the local copper mines, the school started with four faculty members and 23 students on the second floor of a building on Montezuma Avenue in Houghton.

Today, more than 60 percent of Michigan Tech students are enrolled in our 12 undergraduate and 29 graduate engineering programs across nine departments. Our students and curriculum embrace the spirit of hard work and fortitude our founders once had.

Research at Michigan Tech spans a vast range of expertise: sustainable engineering, the Great Lakes ecosystem, the emerald ash borer invasion, ionic space propulsion, 3D printing, cancer-fighting rice—the list goes on and on. Learn more about Michigan Tech’s research areas below to get a better idea of the groundbreaking work that happens here every day.

Michigan Tech Career Services connects students, employers, alumni, faculty, and staff. Our collaborative programming and coaching launches and supports career journeys.
