History

  • Founded in 1889 as New Mexico’s flagship institution, The University of New Mexico now occupies nearly 800 acres near old Route 66 in the heart of Albuquerque, a metropolitan area of more than 900,000 people. 
  • From the magnificent mesas to the west, past the banks of the historic Rio Grande to the Sandia Mountains to the east, Albuquerque is a blend of culture and cuisine, pursuits and panoramas.

Education

  • The University of New Mexico offers a wide variety of academic programs through twelve Colleges and Schools. 
  • These academic options includes more than 215 degree and certificate programs, including 94 baccalaureate, 71 masters and 37 doctoral degrees.

  • Our office provides professional career advisement to current UNM students as well as UNM alumni and community members.
  • The Office of Career Services is available through in-person or Zoom appointments to assist students with choosing or changing their major, assessing abilities, interests and values, clarifying career goals, writing a resume or cover letter, preparing for interviews, conducting a job search or preparing to attend graduate school.

Services

Student services

  • The Global Education Office (GEO) provides services to international students and scholars coming to UNM, coordinates opportunities for UNM students to study overseas and offers intensive English language programs to students interested in studying in the U.S.
  • As an advocate for international programs on campus, GEO helps to prepare UNM faculty, administrators, and students to understand and work effectively in a complex and rapidly changing global community.

American Campus Communities (ACC) operates Casas del Rio and Lobo Village as housing options which UNM and community college students may choose. Students sign a lease directly with American Campus Communities when they select Casas del Rio or Lobo Village.

Living in the UNM Residence Halls provides many systems and staff resources to help keep you safe.

Library services

  • The University Libraries system on the central campus at UNM has the largest library collection in the state. 
  • The four libraries in the system are Zimmerman Library, Centennial Science and Engineering Library, Fine Arts and Design Library and Parish Memorial Library. 
  • The Center for Southwest Research and Special Collections is nationally recognized for the quality of the collection.

ICT services

  • The IT Organization is overseen by the Office of the CIO and consists of five main areas: Applications, Classroom Technologies, Computing Platforms, Customer Service, and Networks.

Medical services

  • Student Health & Counseling (SHAC) provides quality health and counseling services to all UNM students to foster student success. Fees charged at SHAC are much lower than community rates. SHAC is funded in part by student activity fees.

  • Offering a distinctive campus environment with a Pueblo Revival architectural theme, the campus buildings echo nearby Pueblo Indian villages. 
  • The nationally recognized campus arboretum and the popular duck pond offer an outstanding botanical experience in the midst of one of New Mexico's great public open spaces.

Accreditation

  • The University of New Mexico has been continuously accredited through the Higher Learning Commission of (HLC) since 1922. 
  • The HLC accreditation covers all of UNM's campuses and programs. The institution's last comprehensive review occurred in March 2019, and resulted in the reaffirmation of accreditation.
