History
In 1938, the nucleus of the Alexandria University (formerly known as Farouk University) had its beginning in the form of two faculties of Fouad the First University. These were the faculties of Arts and Law. The faculty of Engineering was then established in 1941.
Education
According to University's vision, higher education faces several challenges to meet the community needs in the twenty one century, and Alexandria University should be able to face this challenge, and take this responsibility, in order to lead the fields of education, technology, and scientific discoveries, by providing an atmosphere of activity innovation and intellectual. And also, to provide opportunities for fruitful cooperation, Alexandria University remains committed by education and research, not only in academic fields, but also in the culture, nationalism and institutional fields.

Alexandria University as a pioneer and innovative institution provides an accessible, adaptable and challenging learning environment and to develop graduates and scientific research that are required to meet its local and international level needs. As an academic institution, Alexandria University considers the intellectual and personal growth of individual as a central goal. The university's programs are designed to achieve the expansion of perception, enrich knowledge, deepen understanding, create disciplined habits of thought and provide appropriate jobs for students, and thus help to build members have a sense of responsibility and productive citizens.

Student services
Alexandria University is administered through the University Council headed by the University President and with the membership of: four Vice-Presidents, Deans of all the Faculties and Institutes of the University, and four members with expertise on university education; appointed for two years liable to extension, after a resolution taken by the University President and after members of the Council state their opinion. The Secretary General of the University attends all Council meetings as Secretary of these sessions and takes part in the discussions.

Digital Library Project University of Alexandria, one of the development of education projects within the University, aims to automate the university libraries and business development and availability of all library holdings and services in the form of eBooks to facilitate the work and also participate in a number of global databases to provide the latest global research for other members of the
Campus life
The main objective of the accommodation system is to provide an environment conductive to both personal development and academic achievement. Alexandria University offers heavily subsidized housing facilities to about 5460 students. The University dormitories comprise several buildings which are conveniently located near the University Campus.
The Institute of Medical Research and the Faculty of Tourism and Hotels - Alexandria University have obtained the accreditation certificate from the National Authority for Quality Assurance of Education & Accreditation
