Nottingham College

Based in the vibrant "student city" of Nottingham, Central College has over 30 years' experience of helping international students achieve their dream of studying at a British university. Our International Foundation Programmes, available in 6 subjects, will bring qualifications gained in your home country up to the required standard for entry to undergraduate study, whilst improving your English.

History

Central College Nottingham’s international work began over 30 years ago, specialising in courses that will equip international students with the skills and knowledge they need to progress to a British University.

Our International Foundation Programmes were originally developed with the University of Nottingham, and are accepted by many British universities.

Education

All of our International Foundation Programmes combine individual subject modules specific to the chosen Foundation Programme, with a core programme of English for Academic Purposes, Study Skills and IT. For example – students taking International Foundation in Science will study Maths, Biology and Chemistry.

Class sizes are relatively small, with a maximum of 15-20 students in each class, which means all students benefit from a high level of personal attention from their tutors. Students are encouraged to participate in class activities such as discussions, group work, practical tasks and presentations.

Career

Students who successfully complete their International Foundation Programme usually progress to undergraduate study of a related subject at a British university. Students can choose to apply to any university, but the University of Nottingham and the University of Hull will guarantee conditional offers for selected courses. Popular universities in recent years include: Bath, Bristol, Durham, Leeds, Keele, Manchester, UEA, Warwick and York.

Student services

All international students are supported by the International Office, which begins at the point of application. The team supports students through the admission process, and also offers an accommodation service, pre-arrival support, advice and support during the course, and guidance on applying to university.

For academic support, all international students are allocated a Personal Tutor, who will regularly discuss progress and offer help with course-related matters if needed.

Housing services

Homestay is compulsory for all students under the age of 18. We have a network of Homestay Hosts, who are inspected annually by our Accommodation Officer, and all members of the household over the age of 18 undergo criminal records checks prior to appointment. All Homestay is either within walking distance, or within a single bus/tram journey from the College.

We also work with several local accommodation providers, offering purpose-built, self-catering student accommodation for those aged 18 and over. We have small student accommodation facilities in Beeston, the area of Nottingham where the College is based, or much larger complexes closer to the city centre.

Library services

The College has a Library Resource Centre, which is equipped with a good selection of books and other resources to support students’ studies. It is free to use and students can borrow books using their student card. There are also quiet study areas, computer rooms and printing and photocopying facilities within this area.

Campus life

Being a government funded college, our campuses are small and friendly, and international students study at the same campuses as home students. Some activities are organized to offer the two groups of students the chance to work together.

All campuses have cafeterias, which are open daily during term time, offering a range of hot and cold meals, snacks and drinks.

The International Office organises some trips/social activities each year, which are usually free of charge. There is also a Summer Ball/Awards Party for International Foundation students each year in June.
