History

  • 1710: Establishment of quarantine facilities for plague victims just outside Berlin's city limits
  • 1727: Expansion to a military hospital with educational training centre. Friedrich Wilhelm I. names the new building the "Charité" 
  • 1946 – 1989: The Charité serves as the most prestigious institute of the GDR

Education

Traditionally, Charité has been involved in the training of doctors and dentists. However, the university now also offers a Bachelor's Degree in Health Care Sciences, and eleven Master's Degrees that prepare students for managerial roles within the health care sector. 

Research

Innovative capacity and responsible governance, for the benefit of patients and society - these are the central tenets behind all of Charité research endeavors. At Charité, approximately 3,700 researchers are actively engaged in the development of pioneering innovations in the field of medicine. Committed to the highest standards of quality and sustainability, they work across 1,000 projects, working groups and collaborative projects. There is a particular focus on the interface between basic and patient-oriented research, which seeks to foster interdisciplinary collaborations with both national and international partners.

The Office of Student Affairs is the central point of contact at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin for

  • anyone wishing to apply, and

Housing services

Charité can assist with arrangements regarding accommodation for relatives and visitors. All accommodation options are situated in direct proximity to the different campuses.

Library services

As a modern information facility, the library system offers access to over 300,000 volumes of printed literature, around 90,000 e-books, over 27,000 electronic journals and numerous databases and plays a central role in the provision of medical information in Berlin and Brandenburg and beyond.

Campus life

Charité extends over four different campuses, which are located in different areas of Berlin.

  • Firstly, a large research campus situated in the north of Berlin: Campus Berlin Buch
  • A campus in the center (Mitte) of Berlin, and the seat of the Board of Directors: Campus Charité Mitte
  • A second campus with a central location: Campus Virchow-Klinikum
  • A fourth campus in the south of Berlin: Campus Benjamin Franklin

Student clubs

At Charité, students have the opportunity to get involved in student councils and committees, enabling them to have their say in the continuous development of teaching and learning; some of the greatest contributions include the introduction of the Revised Medical Curriculum in 1999, and the New Revised Medical Curriculum in 2010.

Charité improves its position in the Times Higher Education World The Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2021 has ranked Charité 4th out of a total of 48 participating 'full universities' from across Germany. Globally, Charité was ranked 75th out of a total of 1,527 full universities.
