History
Founded on 18 December 1960 with the goal of promoting teaching, research and outreach, UFSC delivers free and public education and is placed among the best universities in Brazil and in Latin America.
Education
The university has nearly 30,000 undergraduate students enrolled in more than 100 on-campus programs and 10 distance learning programs. At the graduate level, UFSC offers around 9,000 places in more than 60 academic master’s programs, 15 professional master’s programs and 50 doctoral programs, in addition to a number of graduate certificate programs offered on campus or via distance learning.

Housing services
- UFSC University Restaurant (RU) is linked to the Prorectorate for Student Affairs (PRAE). The restaurant serves students, faculty and administrative staff, and promotes the health maintenance of its users by providing balanced and diversified meals. These meals are produced under patterns of quality control and taking into account the variation of food habits existing in the state. RU also contributes to promoting quality of teaching, research and outreach, being a site for internship and research at both undergraduate and graduate education levels.
Library services
The UFSC University Library (BU) is a supplementary unit linked to the University Rectorate consisting of a central library, ten branch libraries, two reading rooms and an administrative structure comprised of the following sectors: Information Diffusion; Collection Development and Information Processing; Office of Planning and Management, Advisory Board, and Director’s Office.
ICT services
TECDI’s responsibilities are: manage, monitor and assist services of Information Technology, Innovation and Digital Content as support to users; propose rules and guidelines for managing licenses and use of software; and coordinate actions related to the production, provision and dissemination of digital contents and data security, together with the competent units.
Medical services
- UFSC’s Dental Clinic, linked to the Department of Dentistry, offers emergency and urgent care services to the community in weekday mornings and afternoons, during the academic terms. Spontaneous demands are met upon a triage to assess the severity of the patients’ condition.
- UFSC’s Farmácia Escola provides medicine-related services to Florianópolis residents.
Campus life
- The Araranguá Campus is located 214 km south of Florianópolis. It was the first campus to be established outside of Florianópolis (in 2009), with the aim of contributing to the sustainable development of the region.
- Established in 2013, the Blumenau Campus is located 92 km north of Florianópolis and aims to prepare professionals to meet the socio-technical needs of the Vale do Itajaí region.
- Inaugurated in 2009, the Curitibanos Campus is located 302 km west of Florianópolis and offers degree programs in the field of agricultural sciences. To strengthen its teaching, research and outreach activities, the campus includes two experimental farms, one for agriculture and livestock and the other for forestry
