Shantou University (STU), founded in 1981,is a comprehensive university jointly supported by the Ministry of Education, the Guangdong Provincial Government and the Li Ka Shing Foundation. It is the only public university in the world that receives long-term funding from the Li Ka Shing Foundation.
Education
- The University consists of 8 colleges and schools, namely, College of Liberal Arts, College of Sciences, College of Engineering, Medical College, Law School, Business School, Cheung Kong School of Art and Design, and Cheung Kong School of Journalism and Communication.
- Currently, the University has 1 National Key Discipline, offers Cheung Kong Scholar Professorships, provides 5 Postdoctoral Programs, 1 Doctoral Program for first-level discipline and 25 Doctoral Programs for second-level disciplines, 10 Master’s Programs for first-level disciplines and 84 Master’s Programs for second-level disciplines, as well as 7 Professional Master's Degree Programs.
Research
- STU continued to strive for a top-tier university by focusing on developing key disciplines. Encouraging progress was made in the development of four programs (Clinical Medicine, Chemistry, Marine Science, and Mathematics) that were awarded funding under the Top-tier University Development Funding Program of Guangdong.
- Further efforts were made to optimize the University’s environment for innovation, to build up high-level scientific research platforms, and to foster international scientific and technological cooperation.
- STU’s scientific research and innovation capabilities have continued to be bolstered. Throughout the year of 2019, STU received research grants totaling RMB 147 million for 543 projects.

After calculating and comparing these criteria, U.S. News ranks the top international universities accordingly.
Housing services
Currently, the campus covers a total area of 1,889.28 mu and a total built area of 566,000 square meters.
Library services
- Shantou University Library has been set up to facilitate the development and meet the R&D demands of Shantou University since her foundation.
- The new library opened in June, 2009. The total building area amounts to 21,000 square meters, which can accommodate
- a collection of 560,000 volumes.
- There are 1,500 seats and 27 seminar rooms, which respectively enables 4-12 persons for discussion.
