University of Malawi

The University of Malawi mission is to advance knowledge, promote wisdom and understanding and provide services by engaging in teaching and research and by facilitating the dissemination, promotion, and preservation of learning responsive to the needs of Malawi and the world.


The University of Malawi - the mother university in Malawi - was founded in 1964. Teaching started on 29th September 1965 at the newly established campus which used to be an Asian Secondary School in Blantyre. Only 90 students were enrolled.

Sports facilities

As a way of relaxing from the rigors of academic life, University of Malawi students are encouraged to engage in various forms of extracurricular activity. This is deemed a way of promoting student mental and physical wellness. In particular, students are encouraged to participate in various sporting activities at the college, managed by the Sports Directorate, under the Office of the Dean of Students.
