Hitotsubashi University

Hitotsubashi University was established as a center of education and research embracing every field of the social sciences, which make up the learning of civil society. The University has contributed to the development of Japan’s political and economic society and the nurturing of its creative driving force through its liberal academic traditions.

History

  • Hitotsubashi University began as the Commercial Training School (Shoho Koshujo) established privately in the business district of Tokyo in 1875, about twenty years after Japan had emerged from two and a half centuries of national isolation. 
  • The founder of this institution was Arinori Mori, who was later to become the first Minister of Education.

  • Hitotsubashi University is a national university corporation, and is the only university in Japan to specialize exclusively in the humanities and social sciences.

Career

  • Career support activities provided by the Career Support Office including guest lectures, general career seminars, seminars on careers in government, seminars conducted by different industries, guest lectures by officials from the National Personnel Authority, seminars by fellow students on job-hunting; seminar on careers at various companies, field trips to companies, and internships.

Library services

  • Hitotsubashi University Library holds 1.94 million volumes and 16,700 serial titles. The collections in the Center for Historical Social Science Research are of outstanding international significance with more than 75,000 volumes of rare materials in the social sciences including the Carl Menger collection, the Schumpeter Collection, and the Soda Kiichiro collection, to name but a few.

ICT services

  • Approximately 200 computers are available for student use in the Computer Education Building. The Computer Center maintains, manages, and operates the University’s data processing and network systems, thereby contributing to improved research and education and greater administrative efficiency.

Medical services

  • Hitotsubashi University has a Health Center on the West Campus to provide primary care free of charge. 
  • There are one full-time doctor, one clinical psychologist, two registered nurses, one registered nutritionist, four part-time doctors and three counselors. Some English-speaking doctors available.

Campus life

  • Our main teaching and research activities take place at Kunitachi Campus in western Tokyo. Kodaira Kokusai (International) Campus has residence halls for both domestic and international students along. 
  • Chiyoda Campus is located in the birthplace of Hitotsubashi, Kanda-Hitotsubashi in central Tokyo, and offers courses for the Graduate School of International Corporate Strategy.

Sports facilities

  • Private fitness clubs near the Kunitachi station and community sports center are equipped with sportsfacilities for personal use. You can also find tennis courts in the Kunitachi and Kodaira area.

  • In 2019, it was accredited as one of the few outstanding Designated National Universities – the only one specializing in the social sciences.
