Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey

Monterey, California, United States
The Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey is an academic community committed to preparing innovative professionals to provide leadership in cross-cultural, multilingual environments.

The Institute was founded in 1955 as the Monterey Institute of Foreign Studies by Gaspard Weiss, in collaboration with his wife, Louise Weiss, and cofounders Frank Elton and Sybil Fearnley. Weiss and his foreign language colleagues envisioned a graduate school that would promote international understanding through the study of language and culture.

The Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey offers graduate programs that prepare professionals to provide leadership in cross-cultural, multilingual environments. Practical skills, collaborative processes, and innovative approaches are defining features of a Middlebury Institute education. Middlebury Institute learners are problem solvers and process masters, building sustainable, equitable solutions for a global community through our interdisciplinary blend of business, policy, and language.

The Institute is home to a number of important research centers and initiatives. Our faculty, research center staff and graduate students adopt original approaches to pressing issues on the international scene.
