History
The University of Angers harks back to a very long history of universities in the city.By 1080, the “Studium” or the School of Angers was already a renowned scholarly institution. It received the title “university” in 1356, and in 1364, Charles V granted the university its autonomy and privileges.
Research
The University structures its research around 5 centres:
- health sciences
- plant sciences
- materials science
- mathematics and sciences and information technology
- humanities and social sciences,
- law, economics and management.

Housing services
As an exchange student you can benefit from a room in a University hall of residence. All rooms requested are subject to availability. Allocation is generally on a first-come, first-served basis.
Library services
On December 1 the Library of the University of Angers (BUA) was awarded an “innovation prize” by the professional magazine “Livres Hebdo”. Besides the many initiatives successfully achieved by the BUA since 2008, this prize awarded “Bibcamp 2011”, an informal meeting between libraries organized by the BUA.
Medical services
You must bring your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). If the dates indicated on the EHIC do not cover the entire stay in France, your registration to the French Social Security is compulsory.If you go to the doctor’s, you must pay directly the GP consultation and the medicines.
Sports facilities
The University of Angers has greatly expanded its physical training, sports and artistic activities.A climbing wall, two gymnasiums and three specialised rooms for dance, physical training and martial arts are available to students who wish to practise these activities as part of their study programme (optional instructional units).They can also participate in tournaments and competitions sponsored by the university sports federation.
