History
The development of universal primary education created a desperate need for professional teaching staff, for which reason in 1930 the first Tyumen higher educational institution was founded. Students of the Agricultural and Pedagogical Institute of Tyumen could study agriculture, chemistry, biology and physics.
Education
The UTMN offers various forms of study: full-time, part-time, distance education, master's degree, undergraduate education, graduate, doctorate, advanced training, and second degree.
Research
The second half of 1930s saw the start of academic research. In 1935, an experimental plot was created. Scientific expeditions to the north of the Altai, studies of indigenous northern language and folklore and regional teaching courses for locals took place from 1936-40.
Career
UTMN Graduates work at the largest international companies (e.g. Schlumberger, Lukoil, Sberbank), academic institutions, and cultural organizations. Over 90 percent of our graduates are employed. Our Career Center helps students prepare for their future careers by providing labor market analysis, organizing workshops, and cooperating with enterprises and organizations.

Student services
The UTMN campus includes classrooms, research centers, and laboratories. The main territory of the UT campus is located in the city of Tyumen. The student residences are located here as well. The Acting Rector of the UTMN (since April 2020) is Ivan Romanchuk. The University has more than 100 student associations.
Housing services
There are 4 dorms at UTMN. All of them are located within walking distance of the university buildings in the central and ecological district of the city.Students live in modern one, two, or three-bedroom apartments with en-suite bathrooms, furnished with all necessary domestic appliances and of course, Wi-Fi. There also are lounge rooms and computer classes for studying, kitchens and laundry rooms.
Library services
The Library and Museum Complex is an educational, sociocultural and research center for the UTMN community.
Sports facilities
The "Olympia” multifunctional center is built to provide a modern space for students to engage in sports. The center is a facility where students of the UTMN Institute of Physical Education conduct their training. Additionally, Olympia is open to all citizens.
