Karl-Franzens-Universität, also referred to as the University of Graz, is the city's oldest university, founded in 1585 by Archduke Charles II of Austria. For most of its existence it was controlled by the Catholic Church, and was closed in 1782 by Emperor Joseph II in an attempt to gain state control over educational institutions.

The university town of Graz provides students with a variety of accommodation possibilities. Depending on individual requirements, students can choose from a wide range of student hostels, apartment sharing, rented or freehold properties. In any case, students should begin early enough with the search for suitable accommodation. Rooms in student hostels are particularly rare and require certain registration procedures.
With over 3.5 million information carriers, the University Library is one of the largest cultural and educational institutions in Styria. It is a library with universal standards, scientific orientation and public mission for the whole region. It increasingly regards itself as a “hybrid library” which manages, archives, analyses and makes them accessible.
Their Disability Resource Centre offers support and advice to students with special needs in all matters of everyday university life. The Centre provides solutions for problems with building accessibility, information barriers, study funding and search for accommodation.
Graz has quite a number of cinemas with most of the films shown in German. However, there are also some movie theaters where movies are shown in the original language ("KIZ - Augartenkino", "Filmzentrum im Rechbauerkino", "English Royal Cinemal"). Tickets at a reduced price are available on Mondays and Wednesdays, and in some of the movie theaters you may get a student discount.
Physical fitness is the key to a lively spirit and compensates for efforts in everyday student life. The Sports Centre at the University of Graz offers a host of alternative and newer sports from football to Zumba. Our range of courses includes different levels of difficulties for beginners as well as for competitive sportsmen and women. Besides encouraging people to engage in more physical exercise, our USI courses promote communication amongst students and teachers, for instance at the annual Kleeblatt - Cloverleaf Race, a grand sports event with several thousand runners.
