Limerick Institute of Technology

LIT is one of the most accessible and supportive HEI's in Ireland, always underpinned by our ethic of active education - a blend of the theoretical and the practical in every discipline area.  Lab work, studio work, case studies, field visits, group assignments and other practical activities are central in LIT students’ journeys.

History

Our history is one of transformation and rebirth across generations.  LIT traces its roots to the foundation of the School of Ornamental Arts on Hartstonge Street in Limerick in 1852, with its express purpose of delivering technological and artistic education to as many people as possible.

Education

LIT offers an astonishing diversity of programmes and people exploring new ideas, pursuing new knowledge, creating new art, and filling our workshops, studios and labs with the vibrancy that comes from being an institution that is committed to discovery and creativity.

Thinking about returning to college or continuing your study after graduation? At LIT, we offer a wide variety of taught and research postgraduate courses in both part-time and full-time modes.

Research

Research within LIT occurs through 14 dedicated centres and groups encompassing a wide variety of disciplines from Fine Art and Design, to Social Sciences, Biotechnology, Interactive Systems, Energy Management, and Sustainable Development. The research centres and groups all have a focus on developing niche areas of expertise to attract international researchers and external funding to provide innovative products and processes for LITs industry partners and develop postgraduate research opportunities.

Career

Work Placement provides an opportunity for students to gain skills specific to their subject or industry as well as the employability skills for real-life work. At LIT, work placement is embedded into the programme of study and benefits students in many ways:

  • An opportunity to put theory into practice
  • Allows students to make better informed decisions about future career choices
  • New skills and knowledge, personal and work related, are acquired
  • Students’ employment potential is enhanced

Sports facilities

LIT has an impressive range of sports facilities for students, including three full size pitches and an all-weather playing pitch, as well as a fitness centre and indoor sports hall. While development of sports facilities is on-going at the Tipperary campuses in Thurles and Clonmel, students have access to a wide range of sports facilities in both towns.

Student clubs

Clubs & Societies are set up by students for the benefit of students and are a fantastic way of making friends, gaining new skills and enjoying your time in college. Involvement in a club or society also helps you to develop other valuable skills alongside your academic skills, such as leadership skills through committee involvement, experience in event management and much more.
