Reykjavik University (RU) is a modern, dynamic university situated in the heart of Iceland’s capital. RU focuses on excellence in teaching, research, entrepreneurship, technology development and co-operation with the business sector. The University provides students with a strong academic foundation, cutting-edge practical experience and extensive connections with industry.

History

Reykjavík University has its roots in the Commercial College of Iceland, School of Computer Science (TVÍ), which was founded in January 1988 and operated within the Commercial College of Iceland (VÍ) facilities for ten years.

Education

Reykjavik University offers degrees at the Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctoral level. There are many different types of degrees offered at each level. Undergraduate degrees are primarily taught in Icelandic, however there are some English courses available for visiting exchange students and those wishing to do some studies in English. Both master's degree programmes and doctoral degrees programmes are offered in English.

Research

Reykjavik University has a clear and progressive research strategy and stands first among equals in Iceland when it comes to research in its main academic fields. Overall research activity is constantly rising as is the number of publications in peer-reviewed outlets.

Reykjavik University is the first Icelandic university to participate in a formal implementation program of the European Commission policy regarding the working environment of researchers. RU has made a commitment to adapt its overall human resources strategy and the working environment of its researchers to certain principles in line with EU policy in this area.

Career

The University has an interdisciplinary approach that fits well with today's society and offers programmes that, for example, cross business with computer science and computer science with engineering. RU is at the forefront of research in Iceland in its focus areas.

Student services

We want to assist you in having the best learning and living experience at Reykjavik University. RU is not a large university and the benefits of that are numerous.

You can sit down with a student counsellor without booking an appointment, walk up to the IT help desk and get assistance on the spot and make use of the expert guidance of our information specialists in the library.

The International Office is responsible for the exchange programme, international admissions, developing international partnerships and providing pre-arrival and support services to all international students at RU.

Housing services

  • Reykjavik University does not offer accommodation on or off campus. Students are in charge of arranging and securing their own accommodation in Reykjavik. We strongly recommended you begin this process early as there is a lot of competition for student housing in Reykjavik, particularly before the autumn term. The International Exchange Officeprovides support and assistance with finding housing. The international office has a list houses offering special rates for students renting during the off peak season.
  • Reykjavik University plans to build 350 new apartments and single rooms, as well as a kindergarten and housing services to the west of Öskuhlíð in a new “University Garden” development.

Library services

The RU library supports studies and research at the university by providing access to scholarly resources in electronic and print formats on and off campus and by providing library users with outstanding services. The library provides quiet reading rooms, computer workstations and areas for group study.

ICT services

Our IT Services provide a range of computer facilities to help you study. IT suites are located across campus – many with 24-hour access. IT facilities also include:

  • Adapted PCs for students with disabilities or additional learning needs

Campus life

Set in one of the most beautiful areas of Reykjavik right next to Iceland's only geothermal beach, the newly built campus offers students modern first-rate facilities. The building has well equipped classrooms and students have 24-hour access to the spacious study facilities.

The campus is one of Iceland's most automated buildings designed to provide an environment optimal for working using the lowest amount of energy.

Student clubs

The RU Student Union protects the interests of RU students. All students are automatically members of the Union and do not have to pay fees for their membership.

Each department has its own student association:

  • Markadsrad - School of Business
  • Mentes – Dept. of Psychology
  • Pragma – School of Science and Engineering
  • Tviund – School of Computer Science

Individual study programmes in the School of Business are accredited by AMBA and EPAS.
