History
Created in 1973, the University of Aveiro quickly became one of the most dynamic and innovative universities in Portugal. Now a public foundation under private law, it continues to develop and implement its mission to provide undergraduate and postgraduate education, to generate research and promote cooperation with society.

The University of Aveiro offers a wide range of degree programmes in various areas of knowledge which reflect its multidisciplinary and innovative character and are designed to build student competences in scientific and technical areas that meet the emerging needs of business, industry and society.
Research
At national level, the University of Aveiro is one of the foremost institutions in terms of both its teaching and research activities. As a vision, UA aspires to become one of the foremost research organizations in Europe in terms of involvement in European collaborations, and a major player in the construction of the European Research Area.

Campus life
Campus Santiago, overlooking the Aveiro lagoon, is a prize-winning Campus, renowned for its many buildings designed by famous Portuguese architects. Its buildings are purpose-built for teaching and research, administrative and technical support, and include halls of residence for students and staff, libraries, bookshop, canteens, bars and restaurants, sports facilities, laundry, post-office, stores, bank, kindergarten – all this on one campus, surrounded by the natural beauty of the old saltpans and only a short distance from the city centre.
