Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon

History

The Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon was created under Decree-Law April 19, in 1911, and celebrated its first centennial in 2011. Since its creation and until 1985, when it was transferred to its new facilities in Campo Grande, the Faculty facilities were in the building that used to hold the Escola Politécnica, and before that, other key cultural and scientific institutes. 

Education

Faculdade de Ciências offers 3-year degrees (17), over 40 MSc. and over 20 Ph.D. opportunities in a vast multidisciplinary environment.

The teaching staff is organized in 10 faculty departments and is composed almost exclusively by Ph.D. holders, simultaneously engaged in research within the 19 different research units present on campus.  FCUL offers a range of courses on soft skills and a psycological support cabinet, helping students to boost their socio-affective competences. Students from abroad can learn Portuguese at the Faculdade de Letras of Universidade de Lisboa (FLUL) some 50 meters away from FCUL. Research

The FCUL carries out research in the areas of:

Chemical Sciences and Technologies, Life Sciences, Earth Sciences, Physical Sciences and Engineering, Mathematical Sciences, Computer Science and Engineering, History and Philosophy of Sciences. Research is organised in 19 R&D multi-departmental units, funded by the National Science Funding Agency but also by several national and international projects and grants with a total yearly budget of over 30M€. The Faculty participates in nation-wide facilities and has world-wide research connections, (e.g. CERN, ESA, etc). A Technology Transfer unit hosts start-ups and spin-offs resulting from research carried out at the Faculty.

Career

Over 80% of FCUL graduates take less than one year after graduation to find a job in the global market. Master Degree holders in particular have regular access to the most reputed national and international companies (e.g. Google, Siemens, NASA, etc). FCUL, through the Employability Office aims at promoting contact between its students and the job market, developing activities that strengthen the relationship with potential employers and supporting the students in their job search. The Faculty is in permanente contact with national and international companies offering jobs and training opportunities and has a EU Career Embassador. FCUL also offers a Job Portal and a Job Fair and training in soft skills.

Student services

The Faculty of Sciences of Universidade de Lisboa (ULisboa) offers personalized assistance to International applicants through its Postgraduate Studies Area.

The Foreign Relations Office can help students to find their way around the Faculty, the University and Lisbon by providing information on accommodation and facilities at ULisboa Campus.

Housing services

The Faculty of Sciences is one of the schools of the University of Lisbon. The University of Lisbon has 19 residences for students in Lisbon to which international students can apply.

Indicative prices can vary between around 250€ for a single bedroom to around 1000€ for a flat to share (3 people), depending on the Lisbon region.

Library services

The Faculty of Sciences has a Library comprising general and specialized books (and e-books), hosting more than 50 thousand items. In addition, the Faculty is a member of the B-On initiative, allowing free access to the vast majority of peer-review research journals available.

Research Units and Faculty members also subscribe complementary research journals and e-books.

ICT services

The Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon provides IT support including e-mail, back-ups, specific software, laptop configuration and on-campus wifi. Buildings in the campus are interconnected by an optical fiber network at 1 Gbit/s Full-Duplex. The Datacenter backbone uses 10Gbit/s links.

Medical services

The main facilities for healthcare are located within the campus of the University, at the University Hospital, some 300 meters away from the Faculty of Sciences of Lisbon. At FCUL, the Psychological and Educational Support Office offers psychological and learning and/or therapeutical support to all those who feel the need for specialised support.

Campus life

The FCUL buildings (11) are located on the same Campus within walking distance and offer car and bicycle parking.

The Campus and its surroundings offer all kind of commodities, canteens, office shop, restaurants, supermarkets, garden places, paddel, etc. FCUL is located 15 minutes away from Airport. The city center can be easily reached by subway.

Sports facilities

The University Stadium (located 200 meters away from the FCUL campus), comprises a set of specialized units that aim to promote sport, health, well-being and cultural activities within the academic community. The several sport infrastructures provide modalities of physical exercise (fitness, group activities, combat sports, tennis, volleyball, etc.), and also carries out university championships in order to promote leisure time occupation in an active and healthy way within the academic community. Within the scope of primary health care, there are general practice consultations along with other medical specialties with special conditions for members of ULisbon.

In addition, FCUL hosts regular exhibitions on Science related themes and science communication activities. Students promote scientific communities around their areas of interest.

All FCUL study programmes are officially accredited by the Agency for Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education (A3ES)
