History
The Faculty of Mathematics was established in 2007, and since then it has become the most successful place in Russia for attracting researchers and students in Mathematics.
Education
- The department collaborates with the Steklov Mathematical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Kharkevich Institute for Information Transmission Problems, and the Lebedev Physical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences
- The Faculty has cooperation agreements and student exchange programs with Leiden University, Kyoto University, Tokyo University, University of Nantes, University of Luxemburg, Ecole Normale Superieure and Stony Brook University
- Jointly with the Independent University of Moscow, the department publishes the Moscow Mathematical Journal, one of the most frequently cited Russian mathematical journals, and runs “Math in Moscow”, an international student exchange/internship programme
Research
There are three HSE international research units which are affiliated with the Faculty of Mathematics: International Laboratory of Algebraic Geometry and its Applications, International Laboratory of Representation Theory and Mathematical Physics.
The department and the laboratories have been actively hiring in recent years, and international leading experts (Ph.Ds. from Harvard, Princeton, MIT, Kyoto, Tokyo, Toronto, Montreal, Leiden, Grenoble, Lyon, Paris, Marseille, etc.) have since joined the faculty.
Our department is particularly strong in the following research areas:
- Algebraic geometry
- Analysis
- Mathematical logic
- Topology
- Representation theory and mathematical physics
- Dynamical systems
- Combinatorics
