Sankt Petersburg is the second largest city in Russia and it is annually visited by a large amount of tourists. Russian is commonly heard, but English is an important part of the higher education system and many international students enrol in programmes taught in English.

Some Russians may know basic English, but the city centre is more visitor friendly, especially when it comes to street signs. There also is available a local newspaper in English.

Between 11th June and 2nd July, the phenomenon of White Nights happens when, during night, the night light looks almost as daylight.
