Saint Petersburg city life
In Sankt Petersburg one thing is certain: after classes or in weekends you will not get bored. This active and colourful city is the place to be, whether you are searching for entertainment, culture or relaxation.
The buildings’ architecture carries the heritage of three centuries and 36 of them, along with other 4,000 architectural, historical and cultural monuments are included in the UNESCO World Heritage list for Sankt Petersburg.
Theatres, cinemas, concerts halls are the places where national and international festivals and events are held. Carnivals and ballet performances are a part of Sankt Petersburg’s cultural life. River trips can be a relaxation option before an exam and on holidays you can enjoy nightlife in one of the Russian clubs.
Among the touristic attractions there are the Hermitage (The Winter Palace), the Mariinsky Theatre, the Fontanka and Moyka Rivers and the Griboedov and Kryukov Canals, Peterhof palace, St. Isaac’s Cathedral & Collonade and the Peter & Paul Fortress.
The city is also famous for its basketball team, BC Spartak Saint Petersburg and the football team FC Zenit Saint Petersburg.
International atmosphere in Saint Petersburg
Sankt Petersburg is the second largest city in Russia and it is annually visited by a large amount of tourists. Russian is commonly heard, but English is an important part of the higher education system and many international students enrol in programmes taught in English.
Some Russians may know basic English, but the city centre is more visitor friendly, especially when it comes to street signs. There also is available a local newspaper in English.
Weather Saint Petersburg
This city has warm, humid and short summers and moderately cold and wet winters. At the end of summer, there are chances of rain. Average temperatures are -8.5°C (16.7°F) in February and 23°C (73°F) in July. Between 11th June and 2nd July, the phenomenon of White Nights happens when, during night, the night light looks almost as daylight.
