Independent Music Production, Certificate

Designed for independent artists, lyric writers, composers, and music producers, the Independent Music Production Certificate at UCLA Extension prepares students to work on the creative side of the music industry, writing, producing, and recording music in their home studio and marketing it themselves. 


This Independent Music Production Independent Music Production Certificate at UCLA Extension UCLA Extension covers the music business, songwriting, and producing encompassing not only the creative skills needed for projects from inception to finish, but also the marketing skills needed to promote and sell completed works independently.

BMI proudly supports the Music Business Certificate program.

Students must complete a total of 9 courses (36 units) for the award. 7 courses (28 units) are required and the remaining 2 electives (8 units) are comprised of other courses numbered X 400-499 in Music Production, Music Business or Film Scoring. New electives are added regularly.

A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 must be achieved for successful completion of the certificate program.

            Academic Requirements

            • Create a student profile, apply to your certificate program, and pay the candidacy fee
            • Navigate to the International Student Certificate Program Application and submit when all pages are complete
            • Pay international student fees.  You will be prompted to pay the international student fee when you submit your completed application. You will pay the remaining international student fees via the links on the international student fee page.
